About the Franklin County Historical Museum

The mission of this prestigious museum, located in Pasco, WA, is to honor the history of Franklin County through their many exhibits and activities.  Franklin County’s founding can be attributed to the creation of the Northern Pacific Railway, which allowed an influx of settlers to flood into the undeveloped area.  Named after Benjamin Franklin, this county was born around 1883, shortly followed by the Washington Territory being deemed an official state in 1889.  Franklin County was soon flourishing due to a successful early irrigation project as well as the great amount of supplies they were able to import from the nearby Columbia River.  Since its beginning, this county has developed into a thriving area; from 2000-2010, it ranked as the number four fastest growing county in the entire state of Washington.  The Franklin County Historical Museum was formed in 1968 to preserve the county’s history; it is located today in the beautifully restored Carnegie Library.

The Franklin County Historical Museum Exhibits

The numerous exhibits of the Franklin County Historical Museum are designed to educate the public about the earliest beginnings of their home.  A few of their most popular pieces are a collection of Native American artifacts found on nearby land and an exhibit featuring the passage of Lewis and Clark through Franklin County; they actually camped on land that is now Sacajawea State Park.  The Franklin County Historical Museum also has exhibits to demonstrate the importance of the state’s first bridges, ferries, and railroads and the role they played in the county’s early developments.  Additional exhibits include descriptions of Pasco’s Naval Air Station of WWII, early agriculture of Franklin County, and the first farm in the state to receive irrigation.  This museum also contains the Mary Horrigan Gallant Resource Center, which is home to preserved Franklin County photographs, newspapers, and other memorabilia.
