History of the Kirkman House Museum

The original Kirkman House was built around the year 1880 to accommodate the wealthy Kirkman family, who were well off due to their success in the booming ranching business.  A truly magnificent building, it was by far one of the finest homes in the community at the time.  Over the years, it served as the venue for countless extravagant parties and even as a boys’ dormitory for Whitman College for a few years.  It was added to the National Historic Register in 1974; today, it is one of the last of its kind.
