About Marcus and Narcissa Whitman

Even though they lived in the 19th century, Marcus Whitman, the first medical missionary on the Pacific Coast, and his wife, Narcissa Whitman, still remain as an inspiration today.  A brave, intrepid couple like no other, Marcus, Narcissa, and a few other friends journeyed to the Walla Walla valley in the mid-1800s to teach the Gospel to the Indians who were dwelling there.  They were successful in their teachings; they also played a large part in helping establish the Oregon Trail to aid immigrants coming from the East.  Their legacy still lives on today; Whitman College in Walla Walla, WA, was named in honor of these fearless and hardworking missionaries, and the Whitman Mission National Historic Site was created as a tribute to their achievements.
