The Whitman Mission National Historic Site pays tribute to the tragic events that unfolded in 1847 between the Native Cayuse Peoples and the Whitman Family, missionaries that came to their land from the East Coast. The preserved space is a great place to visit for historical information at the Whitman Mission Museum, stretching your legs on the trails and enjoying a quiet picnic in this pastoral landscape.

There are so many things for history buffs to do in the Walla Walla area. From strolling the historic grounds of the Whitman Mission to educating yourself about the native peoples of this land at the Tamástslikt Cultural Institute. One of the most popular places to visit is Pioneer Park, right in the heart of Walla Walla. Experience History Up-Close at the Whitman Mission

As a visitor to the Whitman Mission, there are a few main points of interest that you’ll want to experience. Firstly, plan on stopping by the Whitman Mission Museum and Auditorium. Here, you’ll learn about the complicated past of the settling of Walla Walla. The exhibits include artifacts from the Cayuse, personal effects of the settlers (including the Whitman’s), and archeological items. Admission is free!

The most popular pastime at the Whitman Mission is exploring the grounds and trails. The main Mission Grounds Loop is only half a mile and includes essential landmarks, such as the footprint of the old Mission building, covered wagons from the Oregon Trail days, gravesites, and a restored pond and apple orchard. Continue up the hill to the monument for sweeping views of the Walla Walla Valley and a place to reflect on the past, present, and future.

Pioneer Park: A Must Visit in Walla Walla

This park is the oldest of the 15 public parks in Walla Walla. Established in 1902, Pioneer Park is home to an Aviary, a historic bandstand gazebo, rose garden, and wedding fountain.

After walking in Pioneer Park, head to downtown Walla Walla for shopping, wine tasting, and cafes. Classic tree-lined streets with brick buildings give Walla Walla an air of small-town charm with friendly and welcoming local business owners and residents.
