Eastern Washington is known to be hot and dry during the summer, which means it’s a great time to get out on the water to cool off and have a little fun in the sun. We’re surrounded by water here in Walla Walla, but a local favorite for water sports is Bennington Lake. It’s a great place to cool off on a hot day, and an excellent place to explore and enjoy a bit of exercise.
At the heart of any great getaway this summer is your accommodations. The 5-star luxury accommodations at Cameo Heights are unbeatable, particularly when combined with our extensive range of complimentary amenities. Also onsite at our Walla Walla Bed and Breakfast is The Vine Restaurant, a fine dining restaurant that is among the best in the area. It’s an exquisite place to enjoy a meal while relaxing in the stunning Walla Walla Valley.

Have Some Fun at Bennington Lake This Summer
Bennington Lake is about 30 minutes from our Walla Walla Bed and Breakfast, out near the airport. This 50-acre lake is a local reservoir, well-known for its year-round fishing, particularly for rainbow trout. Apart from fishing, Bennington Lake is also a popular place for locals to cool down on a hot summer day. Boating on Bennington Lake is limited to paddling, rowing, wind power, or vessels with electric motors, which works to keep this area a tranquil oasis in the Walla Walla area.
If you need to rent equipment to enjoy a day on the water at Bennington Lake, you can find what you need at Adventure Fit. If you want to head out on the rivers, there are plenty of places to put in a kayak or paddleboard in the Tri-Cities area along the Columbia and Snake Rivers. If you’re looking for something a bit more adventurous, there’s also some pretty great whitewater rafting available in the area.
For whitewater rafting, it’s best if you head on a small adventure just across the border into Oregon, where you’ll find the Wallowa and Grande Ronde Rivers. Parts of these rivers are included in the national Wild & Scenic Rivers, though there are more mild sections of them worthy of beginner adventures, too. If you want to spend more time on the water, you can find other rivers and lakes to explore in the area, and just across the border in Oregon, here.
While you’re at the lake, take the time to do some local birdwatching and/or hiking. This area is part of the Sun and Sage National Birding Trail and provides habitat to a huge variety of birds year-round. There are also more than 20 miles of trails at Bennington Lake, including the Whitetail Trail, the Meadowlark Trail, and the Kingfisher Trail.
Cool off at our Luxury Bed and Breakfast in Walla Walla
As much as we love Bennington Lake and the waterways in this part of the state, our favorite way to cool off on a hot day in Walla Walla is, of course, by taking a dip in the pool at our Bed and Breakfast in Walla Walla. Our outdoor patio is beautifully landscaped, complete with a cascading waterfall that tumbles gently into our seasonal pool.
After your dip in the pool, dry off and head into the Vine Restaurant for dinner, or enjoy the added luxury of enjoying dinner in the privacy of your private suite – it’s one of the many romantic touches that can be added to your stay here at our Walla Walla Bed and Breakfast! As the sun sets for the day, we love to gather around the fire pit in the evenings and roast marshmallows, while gazing at the milky way in the unpolluted sky above.
