Hiking at the Lewis & Clark Trail State Park

Explore Lewis & Clark Trail State Park

Amidst the rolling golden-hued fields of eastern Washington, there’s a stand of trees and green space that marks the trail of some of the world’s most famous explorers, Lewis & Clark. The Lewis & Clark Trail State Park near Walla Walla encompasses an area of 37 acres. It’s a great place to enjoy some light hiking, boating, fishing, and more, all while learning about the explorers that paved the way for westward expansion.

Upon arrival at the park, you can see how this shaded part of this otherwise arid landscape once provided a welcome respite for weary travelers, who camped here in 1806 as they were returning eastward from their journey to the Pacific Coast.  There are some hiking trails throughout Lewis & Clark Trail State Park, some of which lead down to the gently flowing waters of the Touchet River. It’s a refreshing place to go for a swim or float down the river on a hot summer’s day! You can even fish for rainbow trout here if you’d like. It’s an excellent spot! Just check licensing requirements first.

Lewis & Clark Trail State Park is also a birdwatcher’s haven. The pine, alder, maple, and cottonwood trees that surround the river provide a lush habitat for birds. Common sightings include the common mergansers, red-tailed hawks, and orange-crowned warblers, among others. In the park, you’ll also find an interpretive display with information on Lewis and Clark and original area homesteaders.

After exploring the Lewis & Clark Trail State Park, return to luxury at our Walla Walla Bed and Breakfast, with views like this over the stunning valley.
