Take a Hike

There are more than 20 miles of trails at Bennington Lake, making this popular spot one of the best places for hiking near Walla Walla, WA. If you have the time, definitely walk the Whitetail Trail. It’s the longest hiking trail near the lake at almost five miles long. It winds along an old roadbed on the west side of the lake. If you’re looking for something a little shorter, follow the Kingfisher Trail. It’s less than two miles long and lines the north and south sides of Mill Creek Dam. Or, you could try your hand at the birdwatching trail!

Go Birdwatching!

Bennington Lake is commonly considered a haven for birdwatchers. The Sun and Sage National Birding Trail, one of Audubon Washington’s Great Washington State Birding Trail, is located near Bennington Lake. No matter the time of year you visit, you’re sure to spot great gorgeous species of birds. In the summer, you might see some spotted sandpipers or yellow-breasted chats. During the spring and fall, keep an eye out for ospreys. In the winter, listen for great horned and long-eared owls. The Blue Mountain Audubon Society leads year-round Tuesday Bird Walks to Bennington Lake. If you’re a fan of birdwatching, you’re not going to want to miss that!

Cast Your Line at Bennington Lake

Whether you’re an experienced angler or simply want to relax on the water, a visit to Bennington Lake is sure to please! Before you begin fishing, make sure you’re up to date in all Walla Walla fishing regulations and you have a Washington fishing license. Bennington Lake has a year-round fishing season and the lake is frequently replenished with rainbow trout. There is a limit of only five trout per day, with only two trout over 13 inches.
