What Is So Special About Walla Walla Wine?

So, what is it that makes Walla Walla wine so special?  To start, Walla Walla was named the #1 wine region in the country by readers of USA Today in their annual “10 Best Reader’s Choice Awards”. To even get into the running for this award, Walla Walla had to be chosen by a panel of five wine industry experts, who took their time combing through the country’s 250+ wine-growing regions to choose 20 finalists.  These reader’s choice awards are an extraordinary testament to just how good the high-quality wines coming out of the Walla Walla Wine region are.

Agriculture has always been at the heart of Walla Walla’s culture. The area has long been a famed part of Washington’s Apple production, and the area is well-recognized for the distinctly sweet and delicious Walla Walla onion.  Now, the agricultural history of Walla Walla takes on new life, with the more than 120 wineries and vineyards that are dotting the valley.

Taste the Difference in the Walla Walla AVA

The Walla Walla Wine region was first recognized as an official American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 1984. And, though 2/3 of this AVA is in the state of Washington, the remaining 1/3 belongs to our neighbors to the south in Oregon. The elevations to Walla Walla’s AVA range from a low 400 feet to a soaring 2,000 feet above sea level. If that elevation difference wasn’t enough to explain the dramatic variations in wine grown and produced here, then the variance in rainfall might be. From a very dry 7 inches of rain per year in the west to a much more lush 22 inches as you get closer to the Blue Mountains, the Walla Walla wine region is as diverse as it is delicious.

Just as the geographical terrain is different from one Walla Walla winery to the next, so too is the terroir. The complex aromas, flavors, and textures of wine have much to do with the specific environmental conditions in which it’s grown. You can read more about these concepts at the Walla Walla Valley Wine Alliance website, but it’s these many factors that work together in tandem, combined with the incredible craftsmanship from local winemakers, that have resulted in such exceptional bottles of wine.

To get a deeper appreciation for Walla Walla wine, you’ll first need to sample plenty of it.  Start with the wines we have on offer at The Vine Restaurant, and then venture out from there.  We’ve written about some of our favorite Walla Walla wineries in previous blogs, and we’re always happy to talk to you about wine and to help you plan wine tours throughout the duration of your stay with us.
