Hike and Play at Fort Walla Walla this Spring

The Fort Walla Walla Museum and park area offer a lot of exciting sites and activities to enhance your getaway to Washington. Here are the best things to do at Fort Walla Walla, before or after tasting some of the most elegant wines in the world.

Fort Walla Walla Park:

The Arthur G. Rempel Nature Trail is the main access trail at Fort Walla Walla Park. This lovely loop path, just over a half-mile, takes you through pretty woods with rustic stairs and a wooden bridge over the spring-fed wetland. From here, you’ll find other paths to explore over to the fort and museum. Keep your eyes peeled for local wildlife and especially for birds—locals and visitors alike find the birdwatching here peaceful and abundant.

This park offers ample parking and picnic tables. Alcoholic beverages are allowed, so if you pack a lunch, you can enjoy a bottle of Walla Walla wine to go with it. You’ll find a volleyball court, horseshoes, and the disc golf course right nearby for those hoping to get some exercise before they do their wine tasting.

Fort Walla Walla Disc Golf Course:

Since 2001, this 18-hole disc golf course has been a popular destination in the area on the old cavalry fort grounds. This course can be enjoyed by seasoned disc golfers, as well as novice players. The environment is a mix of wooded areas with wide-open fairways and various obstacles for an exciting day on the green. Even in the height of summer, there are plenty of shady options for a year-round activity in Walla Walla.

Fort Walla Walla Museum:

Located on the grounds of the 19th-century fort, the Fort Walla Walla Museum is dedicated to education and preserving the area’s history. The exhibits here consist of a 17-building pioneer settlement surrounded by beautiful gardens and five expansive exhibition halls with thousands of artifacts. Throughout the tour, you’ll hear stories from the Oregon Trail days, learn about farming processes and equipment, including a replica of a 33-mule team harvesting a wheat field, and have an up-close look at how the settlers lived in those days.

The Fort Walla Walla Museum holds the number two spot on TripAdvisor of 132 things to do in Walla Walla. The museum is open Wednesday to Monday from 10 am to 5 pm March to October; with shorter seasonal hours from November to February closing at 4 pm.
